Ceramic artist Showko was born into a long line of ceramists who have produced teaware at family-run studio Makuzuyaki in Kyoto, Japan for over 330 years. Interested in the materials of pottery vessels which have existed since time immemorial, Showko became a porcelain panel artist in 2005. She began creating porcelain panel paintings using a technique that involves layering and repeatedly firing glaze to achieve a glass-like effect. More recently she has been reexamining the meaning of ceramic as a material, using a process of breaking and reconstructing vessels of her own creation to produce pieces that express time and higher dimensions. She continues to explore the potential of ceramic vessels through Japanese culture. In addition, Showko owns and designs for ceramics brand, Sione, which she established in 2009. The artistic concept of her pursuits is “letters that transcend time and space”. She aims to invoke the human capacity to live life positively. Showko has exhibited internationally in Italy, France, China and Taiwan, and actively collaborates with a diverse range of designers and artists.

京都出身。

330 年続く、京都の茶道具をつくる窯元に生まれる。

佐賀武雄での修行の後、2005 年より自身の工房「SpringShow Studio」にて、独特の技法での陶板画制作をはじめる。

その後、デザイナーとして平面の構成・グラフィックデザインに携わり、他業種の経験をもとにプロダクトの可能性を探求。

2009 年 10 月自身のスタジオを法人化、同年ブランド「SIONE(シオネ)」を立ち上げる。全国で多数の企画展を開催し、2011年より海外で本格的に展開。

2016 年に、銀閣寺の旅館をリノベーションし、工房とカフェを併設したショップをスタート。 同年、LEXUS NEW TAKUMI PROJECT の京都代表に選出され、プロジェクトに参加。

その後、河原尚子より名義をSHOWKOに変更し、本格的にアートワークの制作に力を入れ始める。
2011年にミラノサローネで発表した一度つくった器を割り、再び継ぎ直す技法での作品を、2019年ごろから再び作り始める。割るという行為で時間の概念をゆがめ、パラレルにもしかしたら存在しえた他の風景への思考を促す。
2019 年京都に新しくできたアートホテルの2部屋を制作し、時を楽しむ部屋として陶板画作品と割れた物を金継ぎした作品を展示する。
